Yeah, I agree that the baddies, not just in Batman but in almost everything, are very sympathetic characters. I always like them and support them more than the good guys. It's one of the reasons I got into fandom, actually.
But yes, TDK definitely lures the audience into becoming more emotionally connected with the Joker than most other Batman comics/movies/series have done. And look at the fans it's gotten because of it! People tend to be more interested in the bad guys than the good. I think it's human nature to be drawn to sorrow in a person.
