Haha, I only saw the movie last saturday as well. the... first time?
the Sherlock series (i say series but it is just 3 90 min episodes) is treating the gay in a way that I am actually v into. Basically Sherlock is portrayed as asexual but everyone perceives him and Watson as being a gay couple (which in the 21st century... kinda makes sense considering their behaviour). some people don't like this because it means watson occasionally denies being Holmes' boyfriend, but i think it works really well because holmes is so detached from normal human life he NEVER addresses the issue of his sexuality, and watson seems far more annoyed by the idea that people think he'd move in with crazy crazy holmes after one day than the idea that he's gay. especially as watson's sister is a lesbian. i really enjoyed the way they treated holmes' sexuality in the first episode, anyway.
p.s. by the first sherlock holmes book, do you mean the novel? because the Sherlock first episode is based on A Study In Scarlet. i am a holmes nut but i basically don't read the novels... if you're feeling daunted, srsly just read the shorts stories instead. the novels always seem too long, to me.
