FFN SUCKS

Yeah, I don't care how whiny this sounds, I'm going to bitch anyway.

Decided to post under a cut so that people who don't care are spared my whining. B/c really now. There's a lot of whining.

Here's the longest, most thoughtful review I got (out of the 12) on the first part of Apogee, also found here:

"I have no problem with people wanting K/S. I shipped them like whoa in TOS because, come on, it was RIGHT THERE! lol

But in the reboot, people seem to vault head over heels to try and break up S/U without any validity. And I say without validity because of one key thing. You said that Spock suddenly thought that starting a relationship two weeks after his mother died was selfish.

...But I bring your attention to the scene in in STXI where Spock originally assigned Uhura to the Farragut because he did not want anything to speak of favoritism.

That doesn't sound like a relationship that started AFTER the movie.

Now, if you want Spock and Uhura to find out they're not really compatible, that's fine. That's what real relationships sometimes lead to. But to have Uhura basically bully Spock with "logic" to keep him, that does a disservice to both Spock and Uhura as the strong, dynamic characters we know they are.

Not only did it pull me out of the story (because while I was excited that my private OTP was now canon, I still have a huge place in my heart for well done K/S), but it left a bad taste in my mouth because I wondered, if Uhura and Spock are so OOC, who will turn out to be next?"

Now, what's my problem with that review? Not necessarily in the content, b/c everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but that it was anonymous--with a written-in "Alex". Which means I can't respond to the review. And I've got a lot to say, particularly b/c I already argued the "favoritism" line argument in another LJ review (basically: no way would Spock date a cadet b/c it's illogical and inappropriate in lots of ways, so the favoritism must have indicated that she was at the top of her classes or soemthing). Also, and I hate to say it like this but I'll say it anyway, why the heck would a S/U shipper read a K/S fic where S/U eventually falls apart? I don't care what Alex or anyone else says, a true shipper (and everyone I know well both online and IRL) cannot stand to read fics where their ship isn't the main one, or else where it fails so a different ship can win. It's like, don't tell me you like "well done [insert other ship here]" (especially when that same fic disses your OTP) b/c that's a load of bullshit. Okay? I've been in fandom for 18 years now. I KNOW. *headdesk*

MY WHOLE POINT TO THIS WHINING IS THIS!! The fact that on FFN, people can comment and you can't always reply to their comments is the most obnoxious fucking thing I have come across in a long while. I'd really like to delete that comment, but I can't figure out how to do so. D: B/c I think anyone who just says something like that and doesn't allow the author to respond is a fucking asshole. If you're going to say shit like that, at least have the common decency to leave the author with the option of responding. *headdesk*

Don't get me wrong. I can take criticism, and in fact often appreciate it b/c it helps me write better. But to say the entire fic is bad and everyone is OOC and then not allow me to comment about that is just ridiculous.

THAT IS WHY I HATE FFN. And also their whole idiotic policies. Bah. Yeah, it's cool knowing how many people clicked on your fic and where they're from and whatnot, but I'd rather not know how mnay people are getting it and instead get awesome reviews which I can reply to, whether they are positive, negative, or what-have-you. That's why LJ rocks and FFN sucks, which I'd known for years now but for some reason decided to get smacked into me again.

SO!! What should I do? Report the review for abuse b/c it annoys me? Suck it up and deal with it? Stop posting on FFN? Continue posting on FFN and learn to live with these annoyances?

But I'll feel bad b/c people are following it on FFN now and I don't want to not post b/c one asshole was an asshole. Hmmm... BAH TO THESE SHENANIGANS.

Anyway, I'm online for a while yet, so reply if you can/care! What would YOU do, if you were me? XD

This will be neither long nor thoughtful since I a am at work typing furiously away on my blackberry but interesting aside for the curious - every time you have plugged one of my fanarts I have gotten upwards of 400 individual hits that same day. You have an audience me dear :).
Have you considered the Kirk spock archive instead of ffn? It has the benefit of being more adult orientef and I think you have to be a member to review and you can respond to all of the comments.

[identity profile] gwenaterra.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually LOVE the Kirk and Spock archive. Admittedly I didn't start shipping these two until after I saw the new movie. First time I saw it I could help but comment to myself that these guys would be great together. Then as soon as I could I looked all of the stuff up online.

On a side note, I have been reading fanfiction since I was 13 years old, still remember my first fanfic too. Ah the old days of going around the internet looking at my favorite pairing. And what that girl did was kinda funny, saying that Spock and Uhara are her OTP, and then reading Kirk and Spock get together bashing Uhara and Spock. Put it simply that was stupid, of course she isn't going to like the fic of it doesn't end with her pairing.

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, it looks like everyone but me knows about this Kirk/Spock archive. URL please? *begs with the pouty face*

It does seem kind of idiotic that someone would read a fic that's not the OTP their OTP. For instance, I was curious about Kirk/McCoy (what can I say, I WAS CURIOUS), so I clicked on this fic that looked good, and it was well-written and really great, until it got to the part where Spock and Uhura were still together. Then I was like, OMG NO NO NO NO, back button! BACK BUTTON!!!! XP

My point being that, when I (or any other fan) reads fic that's not in my OTP, I should be prepared for unexpected disaster. And I didn't leave a nasty review saying the characters were OOC on that fic. I just stopped reading it b/c it was my mistake.

Maybe I'm just being too polite about the whole thing. Next time I'm online, I'll go to various non-K/S fics and leave reviews that their characters are OOC b/c Kirk and Spock don't get together. XDDD

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*blinks owlishly* 400 hits? Really? Wow, that's a whole lot of awesomesauce! \o/

Not to sound completely like a moron, but what's the url for the Kirk Spock archive? I've never even heard of it before! This is what not having the internet gets me--a whole lot of nothing! :P But maybe Apogee would work better there than on FFN? Hmm...

[identity profile] nix-this.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

You're an internet superstar!! :D

http://www.ksarchive.com/ K/S archive link - totally bad ass but you are not allowed to explore until you finish Apogee *shiftyeyes* Right? Right? :D

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO, who knew? But I wouldn't say superstar yet. I might be on par with, like, a town newspaper's columnist or something like that. XDDD

YAY! Thanks for the linky! I signed up and tried to post a new story, but it has to get approved or whatever first. Meh. *shrugs*

In the meantime, I'll be browsing that and you can SUCK IT. XP It'll be a long time before Apogee is finished, I'm not waiting until then! *dives in*

[identity profile] nix-this.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
NOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOO!!

lol

May I recommend Jack Hawksmoor (letters! Business as Usual) and Anna Amuse In The End It's Easy) and Jaylee (Inevitability / Improbability) to start? :D

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OMGYAYAZ!! I am so excited about reading good ST fic. But really, if I start reading fic I'll stop writing my own. It's this awful cycle, see? It's awful, truly it is. *headdesk*

Oh man, the library computer isn't letting me save half the fics you rec'd. DDD:

I'll PM you with my e-mail. I don't like leaving it where anyone can grab it. :P

[identity profile] chokethewind.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that the audience/feel on FFN is a lot worse than the one on LJ, and anonymous, retarded reviews are extremely annoying, but I wouldn't delete my ffn account or take it off of there, if it were me. For one, I'm sort of nostalgic to FFN because I've been posting there since I was 12, but also because it's sort of a nice fic archive. Second, even if most of the audience consists of 12 year old fangirls, you sometimes get gem reviews. I've gotten more than a few of those, even those better than I get on my LJ, and most of them are left by those who do have accounts and leave signed reviews. You get the bad ones sometimes, and they're unavoidable, but I think it's worth it.

Ultimately it's up to you, but I think it's worth it. :3

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I mean, I've had my FFN account since 2002. Not as long as some people, but still, it's been quite a while. And I don't mind the reviews, even negative, generally. It's not being able to reply to the reviewer that really gets me ticked. You might have noticed I like replying to people. Just, you know, a little. XD

I'll probably keep updating on FFN b/c I'll feel guilty if I don't, but if I do it'll be when I update on LJ. Hmm... I think I'll post about this idea now! \o/

[identity profile] rhae.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If I couldn't delete it, I would comment on the fic adressing "Alex". That way I could at least know people who read the reviews could get my side, because otherwise it would drive me nuts too.

Also, that commented is an idiot for reading a fic that they're predisposed to dislike and then blaming you for it. I mean, no matter what, you're going to have to break up S/U to make the story work, so getting irritated about that makes no sense. I mean yeah, maybe you could have done it differently, but your version of them gradually breaking up is far more realistic than how most people write it!

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I might put a comment on the next part, but then it just seems like I'm making it into this huge epic deal. Which i guess I am. BAH. It is driving me nuts, though, it really is! *headdesk*

I know, right?! Why would an S/U shipper review a K/S fic and then get pissed about S/U obviously going to break up? Um, hello?! Go and read the fics you want to read, asshole. SRSLY. *kicks Alex*

Honestly, I just don't get it. But this is why FFN annoys me, and I doubt it's going to change any time soon. D:

[identity profile] animegirl0087.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, if you really want to reply to your reviewers, I've seen authors open up forums and respond to their audience there. I also agree with the comment above, in that you should comment on the reviewer in a AN at the bottom of a chapter or something to at least get out your opinion on it. It's up to you if you want to report the review or not, and if you do, the site will probably take it down so you don't have to look at it.
:/
The pros and cons of FFN. Reaching a wider audience, but..uh..reaching a wider and idiotic audience...? Gah, I hope that makes sense.

Ultimately its up to you. If you have new readers that stumble across it and fall in love with it, they might just follow the link to your LJ and they can just read it there. Hmm, that's an idea. Posting up a notice that new chapters can be found on your LJ and just link them from there.

*shrug*

I hope you found any part of this comment helpful.

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe that's a better idea than just seething in silence. XP I really haven't been on FFN in so long, so I've got next to no idea how the new features work. I'll have to play with them to figure it out.

I feel like reporting the review would be a bad move in a lot of ways, b/c even though it annoys me there's nothing really wrong with it. Well, whatever. I'll just have to suck it up, I guess. I'm not used to people reading fics with OTPs they don't like. *scratches head*

LMAO! Yeah, FFN can be stupid sometimes (read: always), but it does allow more people to read the fic. And that makes me happy. So... IDK?

I'm hoping people will take the hint and read it on LJ, b/c I can respond to reviews here AND my LJ looks how I want it to, with the pretty header and icons and everything. On LJ, I feel faceless, you know? Like, I'm lost in a sea of other authors and fics. *headdesk*

Your comments are always helpful! Cheer up, would you? I'm not mad at you at all, about the Comic Con stuff or about your comments or anything! *cuddles* You are too cute, but stop worrying, okay? Otherwise I will have to go to DRASTIC MEASURES to reassure you. XD ♥

Hey, if you want to delete anonymous reviews, you need to go account and click on reviews.

There will be a delete review on that page.

(or this may work: http://www.fanfiction.net/secure/reviews/guide.php)

(And well...as for what I would do, I will probably yell/something at them from a A/N.)

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, thanks for the info! I didn't know that. I'm still not sure if I'll delete it or not, though. I'll have to figure it out soon. :P

I might yell at them from an A/N, but doesn't that seem sort of childish or something? IDK. It doesn't seem very nice to yell at people from A/Ns, but then again if I was able to yell at her/him b/c they'd signed in, this whole mess wouldn't be a problem in the first place. *headdesk*
ext_97775: (*NICE GUY POSE* ...NO)

[identity profile] renuki.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome! :D

*nod* That is true, and I...*sigh* don't know what you should really do.

(Course, you could reply to them and not yell. ...I just hope it doesn't turn into argument. *scowls sightly*)

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going to just ignore it completely. It seems like the right and MATURE thing to do, especially now that I've bitched endlessly about it on LJ. XD

Besides, in my epic AN I will explain the whole Spock/Uhura thing once and for all.

[identity profile] renuki.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
*nod* That should work! :D

[identity profile] wolfishinsanity.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Disable anonymous reviews. Force them to reveal themselves if they want to reply. (and if they don't have FFN accounts, be sure to include a link to your LJ so they can reply and you can reply back.) You can do so in your Settings, on the page that comes up right after you log in.

I completely agree with your view on S/U. I tried to argue that once and people tore me to pieces with ridiculously flawed logic and capital letters. It was horrible.

to ffnet or not to ffnet?

(Anonymous) 2009-08-26 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
My dear, FFnet ST09 is full of I Want To Be BAMF Uhura 13 years old girls. Don´t worry about it and don´t reply. It isn´t worth it. I don´t know if you have noticed, but some K/S fics in FFnet have an AN:"I love Uhura, she is is BAMF, I´m not bashing her in this story, they had an amicable split a year ago, and they are still very good friends." Crazy.
I have enjoyed your Apogee, and I´m glad you are posting in KS Archive. A lot of good reading, from TOS and ST09.
Check Amanda Warrington, Anna Amuse, aracnethe,Catalena Mara, Dana Austin Marsh, Debbie Cummins, Elise Madrid, drarroway, Isabol, jesmihr, Killa, UKJess, Sylvia Bond. All from TOS, sometimes in an Old Guard style, but you can find interesting things.
Oh, I´m Anon too. Don´t hate me please! I found your lj following a rec someplace...Rhaegal, perhaps? and I just had to add my two cents.
Please, finish the story! I don´t read WIPs, so now I´m taking a big risk...

Re: to ffnet or not to ffnet?

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I really don't have the time online to peruse FFN fics, so I haven't checked them out. But I'm glad you told me what's up with them. It all makes some kind of weird sense now. *headshakes* I'm glad you like the fic, and I do think it was a good idea to post in the K/S archive, too. ♥

Thanks for all those recs! *loves upon them* I'll have to check them out. \o/

LOL, I don't hate you OR anon people! *loves upon* I'm happy you replied, and I just like the chance to respond when people give me their opinions.

Oh, don't worry, I'll definitely finish the fic! It might take a while, but that's b/c there's a lot more story to tell. I hope you enjoy it! XD

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I was considering doing that. Disabling anonymous reviews, I mean. B/c then I wouldn't have this problem. Meh. I think I might. I haven't decided yet. GAH! *is way too indecisive*

I know, S/U only makes sense in this one way to me. I can't stand ridiculously flawed logic and capital letters when combined. People think they can use the two and it makes them feel like they've won. In reality, it just makes them look like idiots and everyone who's intelligent can see that.

*pats gently* Have some cookies to help ease your pain. *gives cookies*

[identity profile] wolfishinsanity.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you end up doing it? *has been away way too long*

Seriously. It's like. No. You're an idiot. Stop. Arguing. With. Me.

*munches* Thank yee kindly. :3

[identity profile] kowaiyoukai.livejournal.com 2009-09-25 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not yet. I still may, tho. We'll see.

I hate it when stupid people are loud and get angry at you. It's impossible to win that kind of argument. *headdesk*
