I like that Spock was more focused on the actual insubordination than the reasons behind it, which as you said was more Jim's concern. It shows that they work well together as a team, which is so obvious is canon and is something way fun to play with. \o/
People hide what they don't want other people to see. Jim would rather be seen as an attention whore than as insecure, which says a lot about his character and what really attracts me to him. I think Kirk likes doing the right thing, and although normally it does involve punching people in the face, he still gets a kick when it doesn't.
