I think JJ made it impossible to ignore Spock/Uhura in XI if you're going for canonality, so to speak, which I am. My goal is to write a fic that gets the characters from the end of the movie to the point I want them to be at, mainly getting Kik and Spock together because DUH OBVIOUSLY. But yes, I think both Spock and Uhura don't exactly realize what they've gotten themselves into, and it's going to take some time for them to figure it out. *headdesk*
