Some Thoughts on RPS...
You know, I was talking to
jelost and I realized that there are still people who "don't get" RPS. I quoted that because it's an odd phrasing. It's saying that they don't understand why people would pair two guys togther in reality. Now, hey, let me start by saying that the idea of wondering if two famous people are dating is not a new one--celebrity magazines do it all the time. In fact, even lots of non-fandom people often keep up with who might be sleeping with who, and who might be gay, and who's breaking up, etc. So, obviously, talking about and imagining two real people getting together has a huge following of people, both in fandom and not.
Second point: I don't think a lot of people who ship RPS view the guys as "real people". In a sense, they're people who are portraying themselves in a certain manner to please their fans, and that's who you're dealing with when you're reading/writing RPS. You're fangirling over the characters the actors are in your mind, not who they actually are IRL, because of course there is no true way for you to ever know how they act when the cameras aren't rolling. That is the point of RPS, isn't it? To try and determine how the actors interact when they're alone. They become characters just as much as the fictional characters they portray are. If that makes sense.
Not to say that I think they're necessarily faking their emotions or close relationships to please fans. Some do, I think, but not everybody. And there's a certain sense you get from people--a chemistry that can't be faked or manufactured (as Zach is so fond of saying)--and it's that chemistry that people sense and flail over. I do think there's a reason certain RPS pairings are popular and others just don't have as many fans. It's the amount of chemistry two actors have, and depending on how obvious it is, the people who see it are the ones who ship it. There's also the interpretation factor. One interview, when viewed by several different people, can give off quite different vibes.
Specifically for RPS, I only ship three pairings: Chris/Zach, Bradley/Colin, and Jensen/Jared. I'm going to put the rest of this under a cut because it might get long. But here's why I ship them, and also why I think, regardless of whether or not they're atcually dating, they're fun to play with.
Chris/Zach
Okay, I'll start with Chris/Zach, a.k.a. Pinto which most of you probably already know. I've seen them range from incredibly slashy to zero chemistry, sometimes in the same interview. For instance, on the Insider interview with Chris and Zach, the following conversation occurs:
Interviewer: "So let's get details. Are you dating?"
Chris: "Yeah."
Zach: "No."
Chris: "Maybe?"
Zach: "No."
Chris: "I don't know."
Zach: "Yes."
Chris: "Sure."
Zach: "No."
Everyone starts to laugh.
Now, I picked this scene particularly because, although the conversation is obviously slashy, their interactions are more rehearsed than natural. And by that, I mean that they're simply having fun with the question, but their chemistry doesn't come across as much here as it does in other interviews, IMHO. You'll notice they're staring at the interviewer and not at each other, and answering in a way that leaves it intentionally vague. These are not stupid guys. In fact, both Chris and Zach are probably geniuses. They clearly have incredibly extensive vocabularies and are able to immediately play off of whatever is said. They also know when to speak and when to let the other one talk. That's what comes across to me as being great about this pairing, and this is actually a quality I absolutely require in my RPS ships. They need to bounce off each other verbally, to be able to banter, and to be able to hold their own against the interviewers who I often feel don't always make good use of the questions they're allowed.
Here's a scene I really think shows their chemistry from one interview:
Interviewer: "And now Kirk's got the reputation as the ladies man but we got to see the sexier side of Mr. Spock in this one. Were you a little jealous that he got a little..."
Chris: "Uh... yes."
Zach: "He remains jealous. He's barely speaking to me when we don't have to, when the camera's not..."
Chris: "It's really... it's been terrible."
Zach: "We're trying to work it out in therapy."
Chris: "It's been tough going."
Zach: "It's just not--"
Chris: "Spork therapy."
Zach: "Spork therapy. It's not--"
Chris: "Uh, yeah, I was a little, but I thought, you know, my God, being the, being the 'hero' I would get the girl and get to beat people up and of course he gets to beat me up and--"
Zach: "Did you ever stop and think that means that you're--"
Zach and Chris: "--not the hero?"
Zach: "That I beat people up and get the girl. I think we need to have a talk about the definition of hero."
Chris: "I think we should talk about your passive-agressiveness."
Zach: "All right. We'll talk about that."
Some notes on body language in this one: their bodies are angled towards each other, they look at each other when the other's not looking, and they seem to have an instinctive knowledge of how to react when the other's speaking--flat faces, looking straight ahead, which only serves to make the entire scene hysterical. Notice in this one, they're talking about Spock getting with a girl and Chris' jealousy over that. Also, they act like a couple in this one. They just come across to me as two people who've been together for a while and know how to react to each other without taking a moment's pause.
There are plenty of interviews that show their chemistry, perhaps the best one being the Artist on Artist since there's no interviewer to get in the way of their banter. Also, I must point out that I picked three interviews where they're sitting farther apart from each other than they usually do. In almost every other interview I've seen, their sides are pressed together even though they've got space to move apart.
I also strongly think that, of all three ships, Pinto is where the intelligence lies. They also are well aware of fandom and state Spork a few times, and they know people want them to be dating, so they play with that. The fact that they're cool about it is awesome.
And a side note on a rumor I've heard that I can't confirm or deny. Apparently, ZQ is out among Hollywood stars as being gay, but he's yet to state it to the public. I also heard he used to take his boyfriend to this gay club, but they broke up a while ago, and then he started taking Chris there. So if anyone has any information that can confirm or deny this, that would be super fantastic for me.
LOL, I'm only quoting from Pinto interviews. OH WELL SUCK IT UP. XP
Bradley/Colin
You know, Bracoli is the only RPS ship that I feel is definitely going to happen, no chance they won't get together, it's coming and we'd better be prepared for it. They're so cute and flirty, and young enough that I seriously doubt they understand how to play the industry the way Pinto and J2 do. Also, they're the only ones I'd want to hang out with. Pinto and J2, I'd be too nervous to actually talk to them. But Bradley and Colin come across as being really easy to hang out with, as well as being incredibly normal people. The video diaries really show this the most, and I have to say I wish EVERY cast did video diaries. When comparing how Bradley and Colin act in the interviews vs. the video diaries, well, there's really just no comparison. The level of affection and closeness and personal interaction comes across so much more clearly in the video diaries, and I must say that even watching where the camera moves is telling.
You should really watch the video diaries if you haven't yet. They're fantastic.
Okay, my main point about Bradley and Colin is that, not only do they flirt ridiculously with each other, but they do it in a way that clearly shows they don't know they're doing it. This makes for awesome fic and UST. I really don't have much to say here because it's so obvious to me they're going to get together. I think Pinto has the second most chance, J2 third. *shrugs*
Oh, and BTW, the episode commentaries are great for Merlin. The girls point out how close Bradley and Colin are a few times, and actually it comes up quite a bit in other interviews, articles, and press releases.
Jensen/Jared
Okay, sorry people, but I see J2 as having the least chance of getting together, even though I do ship them and think there's plenty of evidence for it. I mean, come on, buying a house together in Canada? That's pretty gay. But seriously, J2 equally strikes me as being two best friends or lovers, depending on the interview/day. I think J2, out of the three ships, really know how to play fandom up. They know people want them to be dating, and they're using that to their advantage.
Specifically, I think Jared really plays with people's heads. Jensen seems more shy to me, sort of like Colin, but not as awkward!cute. Jared, though, you know he's got it all worked out. A guy his age acting like he does? He knows his fans want him to be adorable. He's built a successful career around being cute and sexy, and he does them both remarkably well. I think he plays his cards right. He's more manipulative than people assume he is, I'm positive of it. That's not really a bad thing--I mean, to be that successful, you've got to be manipulative to some extent. It's a cutthroat field, after all. But I think Jared's the kind of guy who wouldn't mind playing up the gay assumption if it gets him attention, which it does. Plus, he's touchy-feely anyway, so that only adds to the gay vibe he gives off.
It's clear from everything I've ever seen that Jensen and Jared are incredibly close. There's no real need to go over all of that again, is there? The text messaging, the eye contact, the pranking, etc. But I do think that a lot of that, while cute and slashable, could happen between very close friends as well. I ship them, for sure, but that doesn't mean I can't see them as being straight best friends, either. Or even gay best friends, really. *shrugs*
For all of the pairings, what matters the most is the possibilities. It's the exact same for any fandom pairing. When people ship sasunaru or wincest or Batman/Joker or Arthur/Merlin or Kirk/Spock, what they're shipping is the subtext. People are gathering evidence of a realtionship that is closer than it at first appears to be, and they're putting it together to form their own versions of what's going on. Now, sometimes I think it can get ridiculous and unreasonable, but that doesn't mean I'm going to say I don't get it or I look down on people who ship RPS. If you're the type of person who looks for subtext, you're looking for it all the time--in TV shows, movies, books, commercials, songs, magazines, advertisements, newspapers, conversations, physical movements, etc. I should know because I look for subtext EVERYWHERE. So either you see it or you don't, but either way I think RPS is so incredibly similar to fictional character pairings that it's impossible for me to understand why people can't see it or ship it. *shrugs*
LOL, so random rant, but it was on my mind so it just happened. Oh, well. :D
EDIT: I forgot to put the links in. *headdesk* BETTER NOW!

The Chris Pine/Zach Quinto stuff reminds me of the recent issue of People with Chace Crawford. They do this thing where they ask him about all the people he's been romantically connected with in rumors, etc., and they're all girls except his roommate and co-star, Ed Westwick. Instead of outright saying "no," he laughs and says something along the lines of "that should give you your answer." Except that he leaves it kinda ambiguous, which I think is a sign that he understands exactly what sort of actor he is, exactly what type of fans he has, and how much bromance appeals to females.
Also, ZQ's kinda obviously gay in person, too. A friend and I had, like, a fifteen minute conversation with him before Sylar got really popular and our gaydars were going crazy. That helps with me reading CP/ZQ stuff, because at least half of it might be true. Whereas, like, I've never seen Jared and Jensen up close together, and Jensen is soooo shy, that it's hard to get a feel for them, so it feels more...invasive, I guess, to read stuff with them.
no subject
I really do not know who Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick are. Does this make me fail as a fangirl? But yes, it sounds exactly like Pinto. They know what the fans want. They even refer to Spork several times, and knowing the mashup for your characters pairing tells me they're really on a mental level with the fans. Bromance is IN, and THANK GOD FOR THAT.
I've heard that he's obviously gay IRL. I wish I could meet him to see for myself, but I'm sure it's not going to happen. I won't spend the money on any non-anime cons after the extortion that was the SPN con I went to.
I don't consider it invasive to read RPS, but I sort of see it as though you're looking at a version of the people which everyone knows is false. I mean, both authors and readers know the fics are pure lies, and if they don't that's kind of sad. D:
EDIT: Last paragraph was unclear. Reading J2 doesn't seem invasive to me, but same goes for every other RPS pairing. Better now. :P
no subject
Considering how hot they are? I'm gonna say "yes" LOL They're two of the main guys on Gossip Girl, their characters had a wonderful bromance going on for a while, until the writers had to go and make them romantic rivals *shakes fist*
They even refer to Spork several times, and knowing the mashup for your characters pairing tells me they're really on a mental level with the fans.
I'd be surprised if ZQ didn't, as he and Sendhil often joked about Mylar/Syhinder when they first found out about that. He's probably the one that told Pine all about how fangirls shove people into pairings and give them crazy names. ^.^
I won't spend the money on any non-anime cons after the extortion that was the SPN con I went to
The problem with that is most likely because you were going to a fandom-specific con. I've found those are generally more along the lines of "extortion." ZQ appears at cons that are just sci-fi cons, which are generally not rip-offs for what you're getting.
no subject
I didn't know Zach and Sendhil joked about Sylinder. That is awesome! I support Sylinder fully. Although I haven't watched s3 because I hear it sucks and I didn't really like s2 at all. So meh. I'm sure Zach and Chris are already amusing themselves from our squee. :P
I might have to do a sci-fi con to get to meet him, now that he's in an RPS OTP of mine. I'm sort of in a bunch of fandoms but I've never been to any real show con except the SPN one. I've been to plenty of anime cons. $40 for the entire weekend. THAT ROCKS! And the fans are awesome. :D
no subject
Yeah, there's probably some stuff up on Youtube about it. Heroes fangirls sorta went crazy for a while over it.
Well, sci-fi cons aren't all that expensive. I mean, hell, I think San Diego Comic Con is, like, $75, and it's about ten times more intense than any other convention in the country (I think it's the second biggest convention in the world? anyway, it's INSANE). I, personally, don't tend to get along with today's anime fans, so I haven't been to one of those in years.
no subject
I'm sure they did. I feel like fangirling over Sylinder now that I know ZQ & Sendhil were talking about it. :P
Yeah, a lot of the current anime is just meh. I've only been really into Full Metal Alchemist and Naruto recently, although there've been a few others that ahve caught my eye. I might try a sci-fi con, but I feel like I won't know enough and my lack of geekiness will cause my to be pointed and laughed at.
In other random news, I stalked your LJ and noticed your Psych layout. How's that show, anyway? I've heard mixed reviews from everyone I've asked.
no subject
Sci-fi cons generally encompass a lot. Like, pretty much any sci-fi/horror/fantasy tv shows will probably have something at a big enough con, lots of different movies and comics, there will probably be some anime stuff, as well, and video game stuff.
I love Psych (obv). It's really fun and lighthearted with a touch of darkness to it. It's very self-aware (like, one episode they referenced The Mentalist, which is a serious show with a similar premise that, when it first came out, was compared to Psych), jokes about a lot of pop-culture stuff (Friday the 13th, American Idol, etc.), and the main actors are really fun to watch.
no subject
I'll have to get to a sci-fi con one of these days. I like sci-fi/fantasy/horror movies and tv shows, as well as comics, anime, and video games. So clearly that needs to occur.
LOL, it was obvious, but I figured I'd ask your opinion anyway. It's on my list of shows to rent when I get a chance to. Hopefully the slashiness will be as good as people are saying it is! *crosses fingers*

Narnia got me into RPS because Will screamed gay to me and the boys looked so close together, having lots and lots of fun, while Skandar looked positively bored when interviewed with other people. I ship William/Skandar a whole lot, even though Skandar might as well not be into guys and the ship only be a nice idea. (The fun thing is that my Narnia OTP is different from my Narnia RPS OTP, I ship Peter/Caspian, so the RPS isn't even influenced by the fiction.)
Then came Bradley/Colin, that I read because of my obsession for Arthur/Merlin, but honestly, when I watch vids of them, I see friends more than anything else, I just read the RPS for the fun. And what good fun!
Now for Pinto, I shipped K/S, and a (male) friend mentioned the bromance, so I watched some interviews, and then more, and now I totally ship it and think it's the most likely of the three. And it gets me all excited when there are "rumours" that Zach is actually out in certain circles.
no subject
You know, I do see Bradley/Colin going either way, just like I see all my RPS ships going either way. But the video diaries just added fuel to the fire, man. SRSLY.
I see your point. I think now I have changed my mind and concur with you that Pinto is most likely. Plus, ZQ is obviously gay says EVERYBODY, and Chris has already said he's got a few mancrushes, so I'll bet on them. *keeps fingers crossed*

I know right, Pinto needs to happen so, so much. ♥

The first and only RPS fic I've ever written was Pinto. It was ridiculous crack, but still. They are just too much awesome and gaydar-pinging to not get together. It would be sad for us all if they weren't fucking now or ever. D:
LOL, I care too much about Pinto. I should relax and just know that it's going to happen. Then I feel better! \o/
no subject
I care too much about Pinto too. XD It would make me so motherfucking happy for them to come out! :D Which is ridiculous because I should just be happy with fanfics, because it's not like we'd get a lot of details even if they were out.
no subject
Pinto is seriously my new RPS OTP. I would fucking DIE OF FANGIRLISH JOY if they came out. I wouldn't even care about getting details, but just knowing they're actually together would put me in such a happy place.
That's the thing with RPS. I feel like, whenever an actor comes out, it just gives so much back both to the fans and to the overall alternative/GLBTQA (that's the right combo of letters, right? LOL *headdesk*) community. We have enough straight actors and actresses. More famous people need to come out as being gay, and hey, if they happen to be two hot guys I already ship, well then, THAT MAKES EVERYTHING A TRILLION TIMES BETTER DOESN'T IT?!?! :D
no subject
The world displays way too much heterosexuality. A male friend once told me about a female friend/family member(?) who had a crush for a guy who turned out to be gay, and I was like: "Well, I usually can't get interested if it doesn't feel requited, and that's only 10% of the population anyway" (I was mainly straight at the time, apart from drooling over Eliza Dushku and Angelina Jolie) and he was like: "What? o_O So many?" My point being that people have no idea that there's homosexuality all around them.
no subject
It's true that most people just don't see the gay that is everywhere. I have my own odd little example! In a writing class, I had turned in a section of this novel series I'm working on, and this one character is a guy who flirts with everyone. Basically. So this girl in class tells me, "Here, when he starts flirting with this girl, that made no sense. He was just flirting with this guy. It just doesn't follow." And I just stared at her blankly as opposed to responding and educating her becuase I was just TOO STUNNED by her opinion to form a coherent response. *headdesk*
A is for asexuals, yep. I saw it that way a few times and thought it worked. Maybe it should be LGBQTA? OMG, no, I think that's it! That looks right to me! XP

I always see the T before the Q. But I think there are quite a few versions around and they're all valid.

I am going to wikipedia this right now, dammit. Okay, wikipedia says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GLBTA) the L and G are interchangeable, so I'll go with LGBTQ but they left out the A which I include. So LGBTQA. Now I've just got to remember it. *headdesk*

I've only recently discovered how huge a phenomenon J2 really is, and though I don't exactly ship it, I totally get why people would (does that make any sense?). Bradley/Colin, however, is the reason I want to watch Merlin because I have heard of their epic chemistry and can see it so clearly even from some clips of the show. *is so so slow with TV fandom* D:
but yes, this was fun to read!

THAT SO MAKES SENSE. I can see J2 as best friends and/or lovers. There's evidence for both ways. But when they bought a house together in Canada, that kind of really tipped the scale to lovers for me. I mean, come on. SHARING A MORTGAGE IN CANADA IS SERIOUS EVIDENCE FOR GAY.
And Bradley/Colin was just obvious after I saw the video diaries and a few interviews. I was like, yep, okay, that's another RPS OTP then. XD

Maybe the reason I don't get into it much is because I don't know the actors. I watch the characters week in, week out, build up an idea of them, what they'll do, how they will speak. They become real in my mind because I can take them out of the onscreen situation and still know pretty accurately what they would do. But I don't tend to watch many interviews. I watch the 'making of' bits at the end of DVDs, and I read interviews in the magazines I collect, but I very rarely see them onscreen, so I just don't get the chemistry, I don't know them.
So, I get it in principle; the actors are just more characters for those in fandom to ship, but I don't get it personally, because I don't know the personas involved. Does that make sense?

Now, though, I do think that there's evidence of RPS with the three pairings I mentioned, but that's only because I've watched interviews and stuff with them. If you don't watch interviews, you're not going to get the chemistry, so it amkes sense why you don't do RPS.
But if you ever do start watching interviews, you might see RPS. I mean, IRL I was just relating RPS to tabloids and gossip columns and the like. It's liek, you see the chemistry and how two people interact, and your mind goes there. I don't see much of a difference between RPS and non-fandom people wondering if Brad Pitt's got a thing for Cameron Diaz, or whatever. :P
