I loved this chapter, it was a great addition particularly because it built their characters even more.
Particularly in the incident where Spock was more concerned with the fact that the Officer wouldn't listen to orders, rather than concentrating on the fact that it was racially motivated, like Kirk did. This was really an ordeal that shapes how their personalities and their relationship entertwines to make something that balances so perfectly.
In addition to that, the introspective Kirk parts show how modest he is on the inside, while still being kind of attention whore on the outside. Sort of like the opposite of what most people would be hiding. I loved how he got a rush out of punishing Wilshaw, something of enjoying making things right in the universe, but without his usual lack of self preservation and bloodletting.
McCoy's involvement with this was great because it shows how much his opinion is valued to Kirk. I love how in a sense, he is testing the waters in the ordeal between his three friends by, from my observations, concentrating on their reactions rather than the words they are speaking. I love how devious he is, like an emotion ninja.
