Oh Uhura, how long can you keep kidding yourself? I know what you mean about writing Uhura. She's a great, strong character, her relationship with Spock is canon and needs to be dealt with accordingly. Yet at the same time, she's in the way and needs to be dispatched so that Spock and Jim can get together (like Chekov seemed to think they already were, and I doubt he's the only one with all the gossiping that goes on *g*).
She's a perceptive woman, yet, like a lot of people, she's blind to those closest to her. She refuses to see Spock and Jim's closeness for what it is, she refuses to see Spock's distance from her as anything other than cultural differences and she doesn't want to hear other's opinions on it. Yet she's also being quite manipulative, possibly without even realising it ::cuts her some slack::. She makes it all sound so reasonable; she doesn't want Spock not to have friends, she doesn't want him to not spend any time with said friends...yet she actually really does want those things. She wants Spock to turn to her, not Jim; she wants him to spend his time with her, not Jim. She doesn't want to talk about Jim. And she doesn't seem to realise that she's essentially trying to change Spock into what she wants him to be, despite all the lip service she pays to cultural differences.
It's tough to write her sympathetically when your readership is all or mostly slashers who want her out of the way. ;)
As for the rest of this, so much of it had me in stitches- every word out of Chekov's mouth! Jim breaking his chair! Spock's 'I told you so' and associated dry comments at above mentioned chair-breakage! *vbg*
Speaking of Spock; how much longer will he be in the dark about his reasons for spending so much time with Jim and being so bothered about his flirting?
